Veterinarians and dog lover alike are embracing a new therapy for our canine friends. The importance of soft tissue manipulation (massage) and swimming (hydrotherapy), aid in the prevention of injury and encourages overall wellness in our dogs.

So here we are in 2012! Wow…where did last year go??
So much has happened in our world here at Sierra Springs with Shari’s Quest and Guardians P.A.W.s!

Many new friend have come into our life…and we have had to say ” Bye…see you again” to other friends.

We have enhanced the lives of many, many animals this past year….and look forward to doing so much more this year.

The official creation of Guardians P.A.W.s…it’s growth…the new team….the fund raising fun..the great things it is doing…the lives it is touching…and will touch is very heart-warming.

I am so very happy that I am able to pursue my dreams…and watch them come true.

As we are so attached to our animals…with watching them feel and act better, our lives as animal lovers and guardians are hugely enhanced!!

My quest remains…to enhance the lives of animals and their people. This year will see this quest become more…shall we say…pronounced. Much more powerful and very very loud!

We are partnering with great people and companies to raise up my vision and make the dreams…realities!

Watch for the opening of several new pools…with quiet rooms for other amazing people to work their magic to help dogs…and other animals…as they work toward feeling better in many ways.

I will be walking from Trenton to Newcastle ….with the help of many many great people and animals to get the word out there…and help raise funds for animals in need of rehab with Guardians P.A.W.s. We will have a celebrity or two join us with this.

As well, we will be holding a 50′s dance “Twisting for P.A.W.s”, and have a car show, we will be doing a motorcycle ” ride for Guardians P.A.W.s”…holding a benefit concert….and more!!!

Also watch for the announcements of the partners who are coming on board to build the Wellness Centre !!!

This Centre will be amazing!! Like nothing else in the world and nothing short of Nirvana!

A place where miracles happen!

Montana, turned 15 this past August…and I notice these last few weeks he is finding his back end to be more weak than before. As long as I feel he’s happy, and not in pain, living a good quality life, I will help him to feel the best he can.

Making that final decision is not easy. Even though in your heart you know it’s the right thing to do…letting go…for their sake is still very painful.

It takes great courage to help your old friend cross over to a better, pain-free place. We all hope they will be able to run and play with other friends when they leave.

I believe this is true.
I also believe we will see each other again!

For all of us who are nearing…or at that decision point…hang in there!

Do the right thing…for them…not you.

Look in their eyes…they know they are in good hands with you. You will make sure they are okay….even if it means helping them to be pain free again…but in another place.

You can do it, if you reach down deep inside.

Smile through your tears, remember the great times you had and keep them close to your heart.

you are never really alone…

This is my boy, Montana...floating with me.

As this has been a particularly windy winter and spring…I wonder if it’s going to carry on into summer.

Have you noticed how dogs and horses act differently on windy days?

Horses don’t like the wind as they aren”t able to pick up scents or hear the approach of possible predators. Therefore…they get “goofy”. The downside to this is they are unable to focus on the task you are asking them to perform, and they have a very difficult time getting out of the “fight or flight” zone.

Be careful when you are working with and around them. Stay as calm as possible but keep your radar up.

If they can go inside…a shelter or barn…they tend to calm down. If there are other horses in their herd who are calmer by nature…it may be a good idea to keep them in visual range of each other.

Watch out for trees….we’ve had even the healthiest come down this spring.

Dogs on the other hand….enjoy the new aromas they are able to detect in the air. However, for those dogs who put wind together with thunderstorms…their world could be a little scary. Their anxiety is not uncommon…and a thunder shirt may be a good idea to help them calm down.

These “shirts” are really just a type of dog coat that fits them snuggly so they feel “hugged”.

In general…most dogs do well with this…but there are some who have issues with the “snugness:” and will rip the shirt off.

So, as with everything, try it…they may like it.

This past week, Lucy has come out for hydrotherapy session number 2 and was much more relaxed while in the water. she is putting more weight on her left hind leg and walking a little straighter.

Thanks Nancy for bringing Lucy out to Sierra. It sure is a pleasure to work with her.

Let’s see how much of a change her body is willing to make with the help of the water!
